Health Experts Tips For West Nile Virus Prevention

West Nile Virus Prevention Tips

No matter where you live, you have no doubt heard of the west nile virus. It seems like most of the notable health experts like the Mayo Clinic, CDC, and even the NIH have chimed in with great tips for the prevention of the west nile virus. You will find these tips as you continue to read, but first, let’s give a little thought to what it has in common, or may not have in common with some other infamous health scares.

You remember all the noise about the swine flu? What about the bird flu? Now that I mentioned them, you just vaguely remember them right? So, is the west nile virus a major public health threat, or another pandemic rumor? the answer is maybe, maybe not! However, at this time, whether it is or not, it is very real, and some major cities like Houston, Dallas, and Manhattan have taken some major steps and sprayed for west nile virus mosquitoes. States like Texas, Georgia, New York, Kansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Utah are taking this very seriously.

With the growing numbers of serious illnesses, and even deaths, it is an issue of major concern at the time. Although everyone should keep a concerned eye on this, there are two groups of people most affected… those with weak immune systems, and those over 50 years old. These two groups alone make up a very large chunk of the population because it includes babies and children whose immune systems aren’t fully developed yet. Weak immune systems problems also hit many people because of medical problems, prescriptions, diseases, and improper diets. Of course it goes without say that people over the age of 50, the baby boomers, are now experiencing weak  immune systems because of aging and lifestyles.

So, in reality, based on these given points, all ages should have west nile virus concerns! However, when looking at the light at the end of the tunnel, we can see that even though all should be concerned, the greater majority of people bitten by west nile virus mosquitoes have no signs, sypmtoms, or serious illness because of it. Also, most people who have had it, are recovering nicely, or have fully recovered without any notable side effects.

For those who fall into the two major groups of concerns that suffer the most, should take steps in avoiding and the prevention of west nile virus. What is that saying… an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? Well that applies greatly to this because in our world of standard medicine, there is no known cure, vaccine, or treatment! However, the health experts at the highly regarded Mayo Clinic does have these vital tips for preventing west nile virus.

  • Eliminate standing water in your yard. Mosquitoes breed in pools of standing water.
  • Unclog roof gutters.
  • Empty unused swimming pools.
  • Change water in birdbaths at least weekly.
  • Remove old tires or any unused containers that might hold water and serve as a breeding place for mosquitoes.

To reduce your own exposure to mosquitoes:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity when mosquitoes are most prevalent, such as at dawn, dusk and early evening.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when you go into mosquito-infested areas.
  • Apply mosquito repellent with DEET to your skin and clothing. Choose the concentration based on the hours of protection you need — the higher the percentage (concentration) of the active ingredient, the longer the repellent will work. Avoid using DEET on the hands of young children, in case they put their hands in their mouths, or on infants under 2 months of age. When outside, cover your infant’s stroller or playpen with mosquito netting.
